LIVE AT WHAT'S COOKIN', 1st february 2006
Source: artrocker magazine
Ever wondered if it's worth travelling out to Leytonstone on a freezing wednesday night in February, with the roads gridlocked with raging football fans? Believe it or not, it was last night, ten times over and then some.
Upstairs in a standard london redneck pub, and bizarrely it's like walking into a debauched corner of '50's Vegas - kitsch glamour, gold lame and more plastic flowers than the combined restaurants of Brick Lane. The perfect setting for tonight's show, then - another Morning Bride show, and another luscious trip through a spectrum of emotions that only a handful of contemporary bands can even allude to.
How a country-tinged, angel-voiced quartet can be quite so powerful and dynamic is anyone's guess, but it's living proof that the core ingredients of slide/lead guitar, bass, drums and vocals is sometimes all you ever need to communicate with a packed house full of disperate souls. Sprinkle on a little melodica, fairground organ and three very different vocals, and you have an audience in your very palm.
Morning Bride - only a year or so old, and hailing (somewhat appropriately) from Stoke Newington - are presently recieving the kind of hyperbolic reviews usually reserved for two-dimensional garage rock clones, and yet its not hard to see why - there is a magic pulsing through their world, where each song stings with poignancy and empathy, and each chorus sounds like it's been your favourite break-up anthem for years.
And with a lead singer like Amity - almost too beautiful for these times, and with a voice that reduces grown men and women to love-struck teenagers - it's almost an indulgence for their songs to be so impacting and gorgeous. But it's not all dreamy, bar-room chic; underpinned by a trademark melancholia, there are surges of warm blues, alluring lo-fi and and even southern rock - hence their growing reputation of being a nightmare to lazily pigeonhole.
Such audience enthusiasm and passion for a band resolutely free from gimmicks and rock histrionics is a rare treat these days, but then to remain unmoved by Morning Bride's spell this evening is to be clinically dead from the neck down.
As their reputation spreads through our fair city on the back of a beautiful debut single 'Isabelline'/'Replica', a second single is apparently expected next month.
If it's anything like as classic as their first, expect it to be the soundtrack to those hungover sunday mornings as the spring finally kicks in again. Go see them as soon as you can, before everybody else claims they were there first, and we lose them to Jools Holland and Mojo.....
